How does the Nationality Document Return Service help you?

Bath and North East Somerset Council works in partnership with UK Visas and Immigration. Bath and North East Somerset Registration Service's Nationality Document Return Service allows you to keep your documents while your online application for British Citizenship is being processed.

At the appointment, we will copy your supporting documents and send the certified copies to the Home Office on your behalf. This will allow you to keep your original documents while your application is being processed.  We are unable to provide any advice regarding what documents you are required to send with your application at the appointment.

To use this service you must apply for your British citizenship online here.

You must then attend an appointment within 10 working days of submitting your application

How much does it cost?

The cost per appointment is:

  • £45 per adult
  • £35 per child

You will need to pay this fee for your appointment when you book. The fee is non-refundable unless you cancel/rearrange at least 48 hours before the appointment date. Please note: you will need a credit or debit card to pay this fee when you book your appointment.

The above fee includes the photocopying of up to 100 pages of your documents. Any additional photocopies will be charged at £2.20 per 10 pages on the day of your appointment.

This fee does not include fees that UK Visas and Immigration will charge for processing your application.

How do I book an appointment?

As you must attend an appointment within 10 working days of submitting your application form online, we recommend that you call and book your appointment before submitting to ensure we are able to see you within this deadline.

If you are an adult, you will need to come in person. Children under 18 years do not need to attend.

Documents that you must bring with you

  • your original passport or identity document
  • the original referee page with the photograph(s) attached
  • a copy of your checklist displaying your payment notification number - this will be available to you on completion of the online application
  • all of your original supporting documentation - we are not able to provide any advice regarding what documents you nedd to submit at the appointment.

  • the paperwork is not completed
  • you need to return with further information
  • or another appointment is needed to complete the process

Joint Citizenship Passport Application Process (JCAP) - A passport check and send service

We are able to offer customers who use the Nationality Document Return Service a supplementary service that allows them to apply for a British passport at the same time as making the citizenship application.

At present the citizenship application and the subsequent passport application are completely separate processes. An application for a British passport can only be made once the nationality application has been decided and a citizenship ceremony has been attended. This two stage application process does mean a time delay between obtaining British Citizenship and getting a passport.

Our new service, which has been developed in partnership with the Home Office, enables both applications to be submitted together. The passport application is held until the citizenship application has been decided and a ceremony attended. The passport is then released by HM Passport Office and is dispatched to the applicant's home address shortly after the ceremony thereby making the whole process more efficient and easier for the customer.

The cost of this service is an additional £20

You must bring all your nationality checking papers as set out above as well as a completed passport application form. Please be aware that:

  • The photographs for the nationality application and passport must be identical and comply with photo standards - (1 photo for nationality and 2 for passport application)
  • If you are making a passport application at the same time as your nationality application, the passport photographs do not need to be countersigned by a witness
  • In order to use the passport checking, the name on your nationality application must be identical to that on your passport and your passport application

Assistance with your passport form

Section 1

Any applicant who is over the age of 15 years 6 months at the time of the application must attend the appointment in person. An Adult is 16 or over (or if you are going to turn 16 within the next 3 weeks)

Section 2

Ensure the name is exactly the same as the name on the Citizenship Application Form and offical document i.e passport birth certificate. Please do not enter a mobile phone number in Section 2 of the application form. Enter it in Section 8 instead.

Section 4

Grandparents' details are not required.

Leave blank

Section 6

If the child is aged 12 to 15 they must sign and date this section inside the box. If the child is aged 15 years & 6 months they are required to attend the appointment.

You will have to pay for the passport application when you come for your appointment. The fees are set out below:
