The Environmental Protection and Environmental Monitoring Teams, form part of the Public Protection Health Improvement Service, and deal with a wide range of environmental problems. They deal with queries relating to:

Bonfires, Drainage, Light Nuisance, Noise Nuisance, Odour Nuisance, Rubbish Accumulations,Vermin on land other than your ownAir Quality, Clean Air Act, Contaminated Land, Environmental Permitting, Private Water Supplies and Smoke Control.

The Environmental Protection Team

Tel 01225 477551 - Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 5.00pm, and 8.30am to 4.30pm Friday. They have responsibility for:

  • Improving public health by investigating and enforcement of statutory nuisances and environmental pollution, including drainage.

  • Regulating and maintaining the quality of life for the residents of B&NES.

  • Providing advice on planning and licensing consultations.

The Environmental Monitoring Team

  • The testing and monitoring of air quality
  • Development and delivery of air quality action plans (in collaboration with the Transport Policy)
  • Declarations of air quality management areas
  • The testing and monitoring of private and public water supplies
  • River water monitoring
  • The  investigation of pollution incidents
  • Investigation of contaminated land sites.

They can help with queries relating to:

Environmental Permitting - For advice and information on permit application forms and a list of Prescribed Local Authority Pollution Prevention and Control Processes.

Industrial emissions

Private Water Supplies - For advice and information regarding private water supplies and the Council's responsibility in testing them

The Environment Agency manage the river water quality.  Sometimes there will be foam on the river and information on the causes of it are provided here: Foam in rivers and still waters .
