Road Safety Week 20 -26th November 2017
Road Safety Week is the UK’s biggest road safety event involving thousands of schools, organisations and community groups every year.
The dangers of speeding on our roads is the message at the heart of this year’s Road Safety Week, taking place 20 - 26 November 2017.
Road Safety Week provides an opportunity to remind children and young people about speed and engaging with basic key road safety messages such as ‘stop, look and listen’ will help best prepare them for the day when they are older and ready to travel independently.
In the UK speeding remains a major problem and contributes to one in every four fatal road crashes. The message “Speed Down Save Lives” calls for drivers to stay under speed limits and slow to 20 mph by schools, homes and shops. Slow right down in bad weather and for bends, brows of hills and avoid overtaking.
Finally, keep at least a two-second gap behind the vehicle in front on any road, especially at higher speeds – it’s your braking space in a crisis! If it’s wet you will need to double that to four seconds.
