The Chairman, Councillor Alan Hale, welcomes invitations to visit local charities and community groups throughout Bath and North East Somerset.  If you would like to invite the Chairman to attend your event please contact Paula Bartlett, Civic Secretary, who organises the Chairman’s diary.  Please give as much notice as possible to ensure that the Chairman is available to attend your event.  Once your event is in the diary you will be issued with a protocol form to complete, which should be returned as quickly as possible.

During his year of office, the Chairman is unable to use his position to influence or become involved in Council business and matters of a political nature.

Charity Support

Each year the current Chairman chooses charities to raise awareness and funds for through his year in office and undertake fundraising events in support of those charities.  Any money generated is divided equally between them.

Civic Receptions

The Awards recognise volunteers, community leaders, community organisations, carers and local businesses and highlight the positive impact they make on others and the wider community.

The Awards are organised annually in partnership with the Volunteer Centre Bath and beyond; social housing provider Curo; the Student Community Partnership, involving the University of Bath and Bath Spa University students unions; and Sirona care & health.

Chairman of the Council - Councillor Alan Hale

Alan moved to Keynsham in 1957 where he attended school and then on to Bath Technical School.

In 1966 Alan joined the police service and served for 31 years during which time he was commended for bravery on two occasions, once by a High Court judge for his actions at the attempted arrest of a violent person and towards the end of his service he was commended by the Chief Constable for his actions in arresting a man believed to be armed with a firearm.

In 2003 Alan became the Senior Road Safety Officer for South Gloucestershire Council leading a team of some 70 people of varying disciplines in the world of road safety. He remains a member of the Road Safety GB Academy, though finished work in March this year.

Alan is married to Jane a retired Accident and Emergency Nurse and lives in Lays Drive. They have two daughters and five grandchildren.

Alan has served as a member of Keynsham Lions Club for almost 35 years and has led the club on five occasions as President. He will take over the Presidency again in July.

In 2011 he was awarded a Lions Clubs International Melvin Jones Fellowship the citation reads ‘For Dedicated Humanitarian Services.’

Alan was elected as a councilor in 2007 to serve the Keynsham South Ward and was returned in 2011 and 2015. Currently he serves on the Avon Fire Authority.

In 2013 he initiated the formation of the Keynsham Foodbank and is now Chairman and coordinator leading some 68 volunteers.

As a member of the Keynsham Baptist Church he edits the bi-monthly church magazine.

He is a volunteer Steward at Bath Abbey interacting with the tourists and trying to answer their questions.

Alan is also an examiner for the Institute of Advanced Motorists and a speaker on the WI circuits of Avon, Somerset and Wiltshire.

Alan’s one promise to his constituents is that he will always do his best for them, he will follow the same intent in serving as Chairman.

Vice Chairman of the Council - Councillor Cherry Beath


Cherry studied at University College London, and has a Masters Degree. She also qualified from Bristol University as a Post Graduate in Social and Criminology / Law Studies.

Past experience

Field of addiction problems, worked with ROMA - Rehabilitation of Metropolitan Addicts - in London prior to working professionally in the Judicial System as a Probation Officer; Divorce Court work, Prisons and Guardian Ad Litem to the Crown Court, in cases of Adoption and Fostering. 


Community co-ordination, looking to build cohesion and cross working with stakeholders as well as a number of different Agencies.


Director at Swordfish Management. From 2003 she ran workshops in the creative fields. 

Self - employed Business

Marketing and have worked professionally in Mentoring. Professional in-service training Tutor.


Chair of the Standing Committee of the Charter Trustees of The City of Bath, and previous Shadow Spokesperson for Major Projects and Economic Development.

Her experience and training has helped her developed good people skills and an understanding of Business needs and development issues. Recent position as Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development at Bath & North East Somerset, 2011 - 2013. Previously Mayor of Bath, 2014/15. 


Modern Art, Heritage, Culture, Digital & Creative Sectors. Cherry is currently working on a European TransNational UNESCO Bid for "The Great Spas of Europe" Project. 


She is Shadow Spokesperson for Housing and Planning, Member of the Avon Pension and  Investment Committee. She is also a Member of the Local Government Association UK (LGA) Innovation and Improvement Board, and has recently been appointed as SW Ambassador for the Board.

May 2016 appointed Vice Chair of Bath and North East Somerset Council.  

Cherry Lives in Bath, and is Married with two grown up sons.
