Applying to vote by proxy
If you can't go to the polling station on the day of the election/referendum, you can apply to vote by proxy. A proxy is someone you trust who goes to your polling station and votes on your behalf.
A person can only be a proxy for close relatives and up to two other people. Close relatives are the spouse, civil partner, parent, grandparent, brother, sister, child or grandchild of the applicant. The person you wish to appoint as your proxy can only act as proxy if they are 18 or over and they are registered individually.
You can apply for a proxy vote just for one election/referendum if you already know the date of the election/referendum.
If you choose to vote by proxy for all future elections you must give a reason why you require a proxy and you need to provide relevant evidence to back this up.

The deadline for new applications to vote by proxy is 5pm on the sixth working day before the election/referendum.
However, in the case of a medical or a work related emergency arising after the deadline for an ordinary proxy application, the closing date is 5pm on the day of the election/referendum.
What happens next?
- Your proxy must go to your local polling station to vote. If your proxy cannot get to the polling station, they can apply to vote for you by post. The deadline for your proxy to apply to vote by post is 5pm 11 working days before the election/referendum. They should contact us for more details.
- Your proxy will be sent a proxy poll card, telling them where and when to vote on your behalf.
- You should let your proxy know how you want them to vote on your behalf, for example which candidate or party.
- If it turns out that you are able to go to the polling station on the day of the election/referendum, you can vote in person as long as your proxy has not already done so or has not applied to vote for you by post.
